St. Stephen, the first martyred disciple, was a person with great faith in Christ and mighty in the Holy Spirit. He was selected to assist the twelve disciples in meeting the needs of the people of God. Stephen accepted this humble ministry of making sure the widows had food.

In his ministry Stephen performed great signs and wonders and was a bold witness to the saving power of God. This angered enemies of the faith who sought to silence him. Stephen refuted his attackers with grace and truth. A mob cast him out of the city and stoned him to death. As he died Stephen prayed: "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." - Acts 6-7
